After getting settled in my Airbnb and getting a sim card, my first task was finding a permanent place to live for the next ten months. I was definitely most nervous for apartment hunting here since we were warned that it might be frustrating trying to find a place and to book back-up accommodations in case we couldn’t find a place before October 1st.
I looked on Idealista, Badi, and in Madrid housing Facebook groups, sending tons of messages. Unfortunately, several of the places I wanted to see either didn’t respond to me or told me they had already sold. Apartments go fast here, so quickly that an hour after touring a place, it might already have been snapped up by someone else. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to find a place at all, and the other grantees seemed stressed too.
Thankfully, lots of people are in this position and the previous Fulbright ETA at my school gave me good advice about finding a place to live – specifically to avoid getting nervous and jumping at one of the first places I see.
So what did I do?
I decided to take the second place I toured.
However, it wasn’t because I was nervous. Actually, it was for all the right reasons – it had practically everything that I wanted in an apartment! Five other roommates, two Spaniards, and four other Europeans, a fantastic location in a great area, a spacious lounge area and kitchen, and – the icing on the cake – my room has air conditioning.
I knew that if I didn’t grab it immediately, someone else would. If I sat down to think about it too long, it would be gone, and if I had to tour other places, I knew I would be regretting not getting that apartment later on. So I went back and signed the contract that night.
I shouldn’t have worried so much about housing, but if I hadn’t constantly been checking Idealista obsessively for updates, I might not have seen the apartment and probably would not have gotten it. I won’t move in until after orientation next week, but I can’t wait to get settled and really get to know my new roommates!
Después de ponerme cómoda en mi Airbnb y obtener mi tarjeta sim, mi primer tarea fue encontrar una habitación permanente por los próximos diez meses. Definitivamente estaba lo más nerviosa para buscar el apartamento aquí porque nos avisaron que estaría frustrante de encontrar un lugar y que debemos reservar otra hospedaje por si acaso no pudimos encontrar un piso antes del 1 de octubre.
Busqué en Idealista, Badi y los grupos de alojamiento en Madrid en Facebook, enviando mil mensajes. Desafortunadamente, algunos de los lugares que quise ver no me respondieron o me dijeron que ya habrían sido vendido. Los apartamentos se venden muy rápido aquí, tan rápidamente que después de una hora de ver el lugar, es posible que ya fuera reclamado por otra persona. Me preocupaba que no sería capaz de encontrar un piso y los otros becarios me parecían muy estresados también. Afortunadamente, todos los demás están también en esta posición y la Fulbright ETA previa en mi colegio me dio buenos consejos de encontrar una vivienda – específicamente de evitar preocuparse y alquiler el primero piso que veo.
Y qué hice yo?
Decidí alquiler el segundo piso que visité.
Sin embargo, no fue porque estaba preocupada. Realmente fue por todas las razones correctas – tenía prácticamente todo lo que quise en un apartamento! Cinco compañeras del piso, dos españolas y cuatro europeas, una ubicación magnífico en un barrio fantástico, una sala de estar y cocina espaciosas y – la guinda del pastel – mi habitación tiene el aire acondicionado.
Yo sabía que si no lo alquilé inmediatamente, alguien más lo haría. Si sentaba para pensar en eso por demasiado tiempo, no sería disponible, y si tuviera que visitar a otros pisos, sabía que me lo arrepentiría. Por eso volví de forma inmediata para firmar el contrato.
No me debería haber preocupado sobre la situación de vivienda, pero si no habría sido chequeando a Idealista obsesivamente para nuevos pisos, es posible que no hubiera visto el apartamento y probablemente no lo hubiera alquilado. No voy a mudarme hasta el fin de la orientación en la próxima semana, pero no puedo esperar a ponerme cómoda allí y de verdad conocer a mis compañeras!
