The past few days, all 230 Fulbrighters to Spain, including 159 teaching assistants, completed our orientation in Alcalá de Henares. Though exhausting and an information overload, it was really exciting to meet everyone and get a better understanding of what we will be doing over the course of this year. Explaining everything we did would take far too long, so instead I’m going to talk about some of my highlights and general experiences.
Getting to know all the other Fulbrighters was the most exciting and fun part of the week. While I had initially been nervous to meet everyone, I ended up feeling completely at ease. Everyone was so friendly and open, and it was great to meet other grantees both in Madrid and other regions. Most people are going to be living in places that I’ve never been to, and it’s interesting to hear what their regions are like and how it will be a different experience for them. I definitely can’t wait to visit the other regions and explore for myself how daily life varies there, especially in a place like the Canary Islands.
Part of meeting the other grantees was socializing at the events the Fulbright Commission organized for us. These included a more informal social as well as a more formal cocktail hour, both of which were a lot of fun (and delicious!). Yet, the times I will remember most will be talking for hours with people I’d just met, but feeling like we’d known each other longer.
However, the main part of orientation was naturally the information sessions. While the sessions were useful and definitely things we needed to learn about, like safety, they were long and exhausting. I absolutely feel much more prepared to both live in Spain and start teaching in the classroom, but I also returned to Madrid exhausted. When combined with the other more exciting parts of the week though, orientation was a great experience overall.
At the end of the week of getting lost numerous times in Alcalá de Henares, we finally took a walking tour of the city. I had not heard of Alcalá de Henares before and was absolutely struck by how beautiful the city was. Our tour at the end of the week was really interesting and I definitely want to go back to explore more and visit Cervantes’ home.
En los días pasadas, todos 230 Fulbrighters a España, incluyendo 159 auxiliares, completamos nuestra orientación en Alcalá de Henares. Aunque fue agotador y una sobrecarga de información, fue muy emocionante a conocer a todos y entender mejor lo que vamos a hacer durante este año. Explicar todo lo que hicimos tomaría demasiado tiempo, así que voy a describir algunos de mis puntos culminantes y experiencias generales.
Conocer a los otros Fulbrighters era la parte de la semana más emocionante y divertida. Mientras que yo inicialmente estaba nerviosa a conocer a todos, terminé sintiendo completamente relajada. Todos estaban tan amables y abiertos, y fue genial a encontrar otros becarios ambos en Madrid y las otras regiones. Mucha gente va a vivir en lugares que nunca he visitado y es interesante oír cómo son sus regiones y cómo será una experiencia distinta para ellos. Definitivamente no puedo esperar a visitar las otras regiones y explorar por mí mismo cómo varía la vida cotidiana allí, especialmente en un lugar como las Islas Canarias.
Una parte de conocer a los otros becarios era alternar en los eventos que nos organizó la Comisión de Fulbright. Estos incluyeron una reunión social más informal y un cóctel más formal, ambos de ellos fueron divertidos (y deliciosos!). Pero, los momentos que lo más me voy a acordar será hablar por horas con personas que acabé de conocer, pero sentir como nos conocimos hace mucho tiempo.
Sin embargo, la mayoridad de la orientación fue, naturalmente, las sesiones informativas. Aunque las sesiones estaban útil y definitivamente sobre tópicos importantes, como la seguridad, estaban muy largas y agotadas. Absolutamente siento ahora mucho más preparada para vivir en España y empezar enseñar en la clase, pero también volví a Madrid totalmente agotada. Pero cuando se combina con las otras partes de la semana, la orientación era una experiencia genial en su totalidad.
Al fin de la semana de perdernos numerosas veces en Alcalá de Henares, finalmente tomamos un tour a pie de la ciudad. No había escuchado antes de Alcalá de Henares y estaba absolutamente impresionada por la belleza de la ciudad. Nuestro tour al fin de nuestro tiempo fue muy interesante y definitivamente quiero regresar a explorar más y visitar a la casa de Cervantes.
